Read Plato's Symposium, introductory dialogue and the speech of Phaedrus (pp. 1-12).  Daily Assignment.

6 September In Great Writing, read the introduction to Description (pp. 10-17), Virginia Woolf's "The Death of the Moth," and Keats's "Ode to Autumn" (pp. 52-53). Daily Assignment.
8 September Read Plato's Symposium, the speeches of Pausanias and Eryxamachus (pp. 13-24).  Daily Assignment.
13 September Description writing assignment due.  In Great Writing, read the introduction to Exemplification (pp. 144-151) and William Zinsser's "Clutter" (pp. 190-194). Daily Assignment.
15 September Read Plato's Symposium, the speech of Aristophanes (pp. 25-31).  Daily Assignment.

4 October Comparison and Contrast writing assignment due.  In Great Writing, read the introduction to Causal Analysis (pp. 404-410) and Jack London's "To Build a Fire" (pp. 432-444).  Daily Assignment.

13 October Read Plato's Symposium, Alcibiades's entrance, the speech of Alcibiades, and the final dialogue (pp. 61-78). Daily Assignment.

1 November In Great Writing, read the introduction to Argument and Persuasion (pp. 520-528) and Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" (pp. 534-541).

10 November Peer review session for second essay.Short essay #2 (Argument and Persuasion).
15 November Short essay #2 due. Research and methodology. Introduction to bliography and research.
17 November Research and methodology. Bring to class a bibliography of five printed and five Internet sources you might use for your research paper (use the citation format relevant to your discipline). Please also bring evaluations of these sources that you might use for your final research paper. Which is the most useful source, and why? Which is the least useful source, and why? Be prepared to explain how your use of these sources has shaped your thinking about your final paper.
22 November Work on Longwood Honors Blog.
29 November Uses and abuses of quotations. Bring to class a quotation from one of your sources and be prepared to explain how you plan to use it in your paper. Thesis massage therapy. Bring to class a draft of your thesis paragraph.
1 December Bring to class an outline of your research paper.
6 December Class cancelled because of snow. Snowblogging is encouraged.
8 December Research Presentations: Everyone, in alphabetical order. We'll have to cut down on the question and answer time to fit this in.
15 December (Thursday) Final research paper due. FINAL EXAM (3-5:30 pm)
