Awards and Scholarships
Longwood University 's Department of English and Modern Languages honors its most exceptional majors with the following scholarships and awards at a banquet held every spring.
Incoming Freshmen who would like to apply for the Rosemary Sprague Memorial Scholarship, the English Education Loan/Scholarship, the Ruth Jennings Adams Patton Scholarship, the Ilma Von Schilling Scholarship, or the Elizabeth Garrett Rountrey Scholarship should submit a writing sample, one letter of recommendation from a high school English or foreign language teacher, and a cover letter to the following address:

English Scholarship and Awards Criteria
R. C. Simonini Memorial Award
- English major demonstrating outstanding ability in student teaching
Marian Camper Fuller Scholarship
- Rising Senior
- Resident of Virginia and a graduate of a Virginia high school
- Must maintain a 3.2 GPA
Nell Anderson Sprague Freshman Composition Award
- Student who has written the best essay in Freshmen composition
Mary Clay Hiner Scholarship
- Rising junior or senior who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0
Maria Bristow Starke Scholarship
- Full-time junior or senior
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and minimum 3.0 in all English courses
- English major desiring to teach English or pursue career in writing
- Involved in College activities
- Selected into various honoraries
Rosemary Sprague Memorial Scholarship
- Full-time undergraduate student
- Majoring in English or intends to major in English
- Minimum GPA 3.0
- Maybe renewed providing individual is enrolled in minimum of 12 credit hours each semester and maintains a 3.0 GPA
- Should go to incoming Freshman, when available
English Education Loan/Scholarship
- Signs a contract in which recipient agrees to teach for each year that the scholarship is received
- If the recipient doesn’t teach English following graduation or terminates the teaching contract prior to completing the contractual agreement, the remainder of the scholarship becomes a loan and will be repaid in full.
- Should go to incoming Freshman, when available
Susan H. May Book Award
- Faculty members submitting nominations for this award should forward a copy of the student's essay to the Awards Committee
William L. Frank Book Award
- Faculty members submitting nominations for this award should forward a copy of the student's essay to the Awards Committee
Camilla C. Tinnell & Helen B. Tinnell Award
- One full-time enrolled rising junior and senior, two awards per year
- Must be an English major desiring to teach
- Must have a 3.0 overall GPA and 3.2 GPA in major
Modern Languages Scholarship and Awards Criteria
Draper-Barksdale Award
- For students participating in study-abroad programs
Ruth Jennings Adams Patton Scholarship
- Virginia residents accepted for admission as freshmen at Longwood University
- Majoring in Modern Languages
- Special preference will be given to student concentrating in French
- Should go to incoming Freshman, when available
Ilma Von Schilling Scholarship
- Modern languages major who has established an excellent record of academic achievement.
- Should go to incoming Freshman, when possible
French, German, & Spanish Book Awards
- Faculty members submitting nominations for this award should forward a copy of the student's essay to the Awards Committee
- German award is supplied by the German government
Elizabeth Garrett Rountrey Scholarship
- Full-time enrolled undergraduate
- Awarded to incoming Freshman who demonstrates outstanding potential
- Must be majoring in Modern Languages
Maria Silveira Scholarship
- This scholarship is in honor of Dr. Maria Silveira, who served as professor of Spanish from 1964 until her retirement in 1992. The scholarship was established by virtue of gifts from the donor, her family, friends and alumni of Longwood University for the purpose of attracting outstanding Spanish majors.
- The recipient shall be a Modern Language major who intends to obtain a degree in Spanish.
